Navigating new technology
Harnessing the power of data and artificial intelligence (AI) is crucial for organizational transformation. Data-driven insights enable smarter decision-making, while AI automates processes, enhances efficiency, and drives innovation. Public and private organizations alike are looking to AI for its ability to augment existing teams, improve workflows, and help them work faster.
Government agencies are leveraging AI to become more responsive and enhance constituent experience, but this presents some challenges. For example, local governments face the complex task of integrating AI into county services, navigating the delicate balance between innovation and ethical considerations, such as public trust and privacy.
A trusted partnership for responsible AI use
To explore the applications, benefits, and risks of AI, CAI partnered with the National Association of Counties (NACo) as a founding member of the AI Exploratory Committee. Founded in 1935, NACo unites county officials to advocate for county government priorities in federal policymaking, promote exemplary county policies and practices, nurture leadership skills and expand knowledge networks, optimize county and taxpayer resources and cost savings, and enrich the public’s understanding of county government.
The AI Exploratory Committee initially aimed to formulate policies, help integrate AI into county services, and advise on safe and ethical AI adoption. In alignment with White House regulations, the committee focused on critical areas such as county governance, public trust, constituent services, and privacy. Members worked closely to assess the current AI landscape, identify potential applications and their impacts, evaluate the risks and benefits of AI in workforce productivity, and seek additional partnerships to strengthen their efforts.
“With AI advancing exponentially and improving its application in business and recreation, questions regarding ethics and security remain unanswered in the government landscape. We are proud to partner with NACo and other respected global organizations that are supporting the committee in new and necessary terrain. Together, we will discover outcomes, challenge common practices and develop sound regulatory frameworks for how government should utilize AI technologies.”
The committee’s efforts culminated in the formation of an AI County Compass ↗ , a toolkit for the governance and implementation of AI. The compass includes findings from the Exploratory Committee and provides recommendations for analyzing and responding to the AI landscape for counties.
Since then, the AI Exploratory Committee has evolved into an AI Collaborative that seeks to expand the foundation built by the committee and advance the same goals. Members continue these important conversations through a series of AI regional forums that convene local government officials and other key stakeholders to share insights, advance AI education, and identify opportunities for the application of AI in local government. This continued collaboration allows local government and technology leaders to better harness the transformative potential of AI for counties.
Unlocking the benefits of a comprehensive AI strategy
By integrating AI into their operations, local governments can not only improve their operational efficiency but also enhance the quality of services provided to constituents, fostering a more connected and responsive community. The AI Collaborative aims to make this a reality, helping partner organizations develop strategies that:
- Equip county officials with necessary tools and insights for responsible AI adoption
- Enhance workforce productivity through AI implementation
- Improve constituent services by leveraging AI technologies
- Mitigate risks related to data security and privacy
- Address potential job displacement concerns with informed AI integration strategies
As constituent expectations and privacy concerns rise, organizations must be prepared to stay ahead. An informed, comprehensive AI strategy is a key factor for successful adoption, allowing local governments to deploy AI solutions in a responsible, sustainable way.
Alongside partners like NACo, CAI is spearheading AI use cases and prioritizing responsible adoption and use. CAI provides AI solutions that automate routine tasks and provide the necessary infrastructure to support rapid integration and deployment. With AI accelerators, we help organizations quickly and efficiently embrace AI technologies, driving productivity and innovation.
